I had looked at Andy Goldsworthy’s work one time and I was inspired by what he does. He is a wide-ranging artist who uses natural stuff to create all kinds of work in situ. He does photograph it but that is not his main goal.
The images depicted here I had done a number of years ago and I hadn’t looked at it for a long time but when I did I found it better visually than I thought it was.
I rarely moved anything in any photograph I created before this project. I always photographed as things were, I would move grass or branch out of the way but that was the extent of any manipulation of the scene. So this was a departure and it was quite fun to do.
Some of these are manipulation of natural things, rocks and branches and some are changing the photograph using my body in the image.
I called this series Alona Bay because that is where I did a number of these works on Lake Superior.
